Brain wave patterns accompanying changes in sleep and wakefulness during hypnosis.

چکیده
T N a previous communication (3), the induction •*• of sleep, accompanied by typical brain wave patterns, during hypnosis was reported and described. The present communication concerns the brain wave changes associated with hypnotic modifications of behavior less profound than alternation of sleep and waking. The significance of these changes will be discussed in terms of the function of the brain in organizing patterns of organism-environment relationships.

Cognitive processing during the transition to sleep.
Dramatic physiological and behavioural changes occur during the transition from wakefulness to sleep. The process is regarded as a grey area of consciousness between attentive wakefulness and slow wave sleep. Although there is evidence of neurophysiological integration decay as signalled by sleep EEG elements, changes in power spectra and coherence, thalamocortical connectivity in fMRI, and sin...
متن کاملCortical Firing and Sleep Homeostasis
The need to sleep grows with the duration of wakefulness and dissipates with time spent asleep, a process called sleep homeostasis. What are the consequences of staying awake on brain cells, and why is sleep needed? Surprisingly, we do not know whether the firing of cortical neurons is affected by how long an animal has been awake or asleep. Here, we found that after sustained wakefulness corti...
متن کاملEffects of prolonged waking-auditory stimulation on electroencephalogram synchronization and cortical coherence during subsequent slow-wave sleep.
Evidence suggests that sleep homeostasis is not only dependent on duration of previous wakefulness but also on experience- and/or use-dependent processes. Such homeostatic mechanisms are reflected by selective increases in the duration of a sleep stage, modifications to electrophysiological-metabolic brain patterns in specific sleep states, and/or reactivation to neuronal ensembles in subsequen...
متن کاملElectrophysiological correlates of behavioural changes in vigilance in vegetative state and minimally conscious state.
The existence of normal sleep in patients in a vegetative state is still a matter of debate. Previous electrophysiological sleep studies in patients with disorders of consciousness did not differentiate patients in a vegetative state from patients in a minimally conscious state. Using high-density electroencephalographic sleep recordings, 11 patients with disorders of consciousness (six in a mi...
متن کاملEffects of waking-auditory stimulation on human sleep architecture.
Evidence suggests that sleep architecture is affected by endogenous homeostatic mechanisms as well as by behavioral and sensory demands during the prior wakefulness. Regarding the auditory system, sensory deprivation has shown to drastically modify the sleep structure, stressing the relevance of such sensory system for sleep organization. Changes in sleep architecture following prolonged audito...
